October 19th is Global Niemann-Pick Disease Awareness Day. The disease affects the body's ability to metabolize fat (cholesterol and lipids) within cells. Normally, cholesterol and lipids should be transported inside of cells. This condition causes cells to malfunction and ultimately die, leading to the progressive loss of function of nerves, the brain, and other organs. The observance is a global effort to draw attention and promote research for this ultra-rare genetic disorder that is currently not curable.
